Penyengat island located in side boundary town of Tanjungpinang as far as 1,50 Km. the Broadness about 3,50 km. its land consisted by the hilly sand mixed the gravel, whereas the beacht is sloping , grassly, partly again petrify to compose. Between Penyengat Island and Tanjungpinang, there are strait which width about 1,5 km which can pass with boat.
Governmental under Sultan Mahmud Syah ( 1761-1812 M), when he marry with Engku putri binti King of Haji Syahid Fisabilillah about year 1801 M, this island delivered to Putri Hamidah as a dowry. this island become famous and draw the people enthusiasm to pay a visit.
According to story, isle in this Riau Archipelago have been long recognized by all seaman [of] since for centuries ago because becoming sojourn place to take the freshwater which is quite a lot made available by that island. According to furthermore legend, name " penyengat" passed to that island, because seaman which have taking clean water on the the land attacked by a kind of bee ( called insect) " penyengat", till generate the victim. Since that event the island is famous among seaman and fisherman with the title " Penyengat Island ". At the (time) of Monarchic governance center of Riau have Place to that island, he [is] opened by the name of " Pulau Penyengat Indera Sakti".
Because its situation is very seterategis for defender of country Riau centering [in] Ulu of River Riau ( Old Riau), [at] last century of island penyengat have many times become the battlefield ( Fight The Sultan Sulaiman - Small King of Siak), even happened the Riau war with the Dutch ( 1782-1784) Island penyengat have been made as a prima facie defender center. Fortress with the defender system with the " portugis style " have been developed in that Island.
At 1803 IPenyengat have been constructed from a defender center become the country, and later;then domicile Which Monarchic Yang Dipertuan Riau-Lingga Empire, whereas formal sultan live in Daik-Lingga. New later in the year 1900 Sultan Riau-Lingga move to Penyengat Island. Complete since then role of penyengat island as governance center, Culture, Islamic relegion, and Malay culture.
In Penyengat island there are Monarchic ommission of Malay Riau-Lingga empire, mausoleum of famous King Raja Ali Haji Pujangga Malay Riau with its Poe, mausoleum of King Ja'Far, and others. In Great Mosque of Penyengat which bulided at 1882 year, also still there are some fossil collection like holy Al-Quran which writed by a hand writing and antique tribune andis full of engraving.
